Texas - the great Lone Star State is known for a lot of things. There are horses, cows, the San Antonio Riverwalk, and plenty of Cowboys - whether they play with cows on the wide open plains or play with pigskin in a stadium full on on-lookers. There are enough wide open spaces in the western part of the State to make several other states, and just as full of a beautiful nothingness as the City of New York is full of people.  It has a State Capitol that is as well known for its music as for its politics. It is a City that has spawned the likes of a President and produced musicians that are treated more presidential than most World leaders. It is also home to some of the best car shows in the Southwest, no matter what your preferences in American Hot Rodding.  One of these unique events is the once a year gathering of ‘Ol Skool Hot Rodders that build the Ol’ Skool Hot Rod style - and they build them to drive, with entries drive’n from all over the country just for this one weekend.
For the 8th year in a row, the Kontinentals Car Club has played host to the Lone Star Rod & Kustom Round Up in Austin, Texas.  The event has had several locations around the city, starting from a small gathering of friends on a football field that led to the events being held on the edge of beautiful Town Lake in downtown Austin. As with most things in Texas, give it a minute or two, it will change, especially the weather. So while being on the green green grass at the edge of the lake was nice, when it got wet, as often happens in Central Texas, it was not so nice. It was during one of those times when it seemed extra wet that the decision was made to make another move. It was on short notice that the Travis County Expo Center came to the rescue with 128 acres on the edge of town that includes asphalt parking for over 4,000 cars. In addition to the parking room for entrants and spectators alike, the different styles of buildings on the property also provide flexibility in the type of activities that are going on. For one, the main pavilion provides a covered space for the swap meet where more than one person found those hard to find parts for his favorite ride. This year, the swap meet shared spaces with the food and drink vendors due to the rain that came through the area during opening day setup activities. But it did not dampen the spirit of the show, with the grounds being filled with entries and a sold out vendor area.    One unique aspect of the Lone Star Round Up is the Saturday Night Cruise on South Congress, where the event headquarters up at the Continental Club. With Rods on the street and Rodders on the sidewalks, the likes of Trophy’s Bar or Jo’s Coffee Shop as part of the Austin Music scene provides a great background for the nights activities in the cool night air. The same venues provide a Hot Rodder start on Sunday morning, as once again there is a chance to cruise. With the Rods and muscle cars lined up down the middle of South Congress for a cruise out thru the Texas hill country where the classic burger joint ‘Ski Shores’ has been serving families since 1954. Just part of the three days of ‘ol school Hot Rod fun in Central Texas.
