The Corvette buying public was caught off guard by the redesigned 1958 model with numerous body changes and trim additions.  Plus the base cost had escalated to $3591, about $415 over the cost of the 1957 sticker.   Ed Kelly from Palm Harbor, Florida is the proud owner of this Signet Red Show Car.   He drives and then displays his highly detailed vehicle at many local judged events and has not failed to bring home the gold at trophy time.  This Corvette has the $16.15 optional Snowcrest White Cove Paint.   About one-third of the production received a contrasting Cove option.
The Dual Headlights, fake Louvers on the Hood, Fender Coves redesigned and added trim to Trunk, top of Fenders and Cove openings.   There was talk from some that Corvette made to many changes and expensive, but with the demise of the Ford two seater Thunder Bird for 1958 the Corvette Sales were up 2829 units.
There was five power plants offered, with base 283/230hp, 2X4 Carb 245hp and 270hp, a Fuel Injected 250hp and 290hp.  On the menu were three transmission choices, base 3-Speed at no additional cost, a Powerglide Automatic for $188.30 and a 4-Speed for $215.20.  Positraction Rear End 3:70. 4:11 and 4:56 set you back $48.45.
Watching the classic car auctions a clean driver style, non-matching numbers, are sold in the $40000 range.  With Certified Pedigree units on the block at $88000.  Over the last six months there has been no significant growth or decline in investment quality Corvettes in this production year.  Taking Classic, Street Rods, Customs and Specialty Cars, the market is sitting on its hands “Not Making a Bid” waiting to see what and where the economy is heading.
