57th annual Houston Autorama

A Thanksgiving tradition continues when the indoor car show series World of Wheels starts with the Houston AutoRama. This was the 57th annual four day event that is held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston, Texas. Auto enthusiasts from all over Texas and around the country participate in the event.

One end of the GRB was for the Dan Kruse Classics auction which is always full of a variety of vehicles that get auctioned for reasonable money and at the other end of the GRB are collector toys and a swap meet plus throughout the show floor are other auto-related venders. There was also something for the ladies, a shopping area called Women’s World. The show features celebrity appearances like legendary car builder and painter Gene Winfield who does metal working demonstrations each day of the show. There are bands playing and a pin-up girl contest in the Ol’ Skool Rodz section of the show where you will see many traditional hot rods and customs.

AutoRama is where car lovers of all ages come to celebrate all things with a motor. The convention center was loaded with custom cars, trucks and motorcycles but also had plenty of restored classics, lowriders, muscle cars and race cars too. The exhibitors are competing for awards and cash and for those members competing in the International Show Car Association championship series they will be showing across the country for even bigger awards and bigger cash. Billy and Debbie Thomas took home the Millwinders award and the Best Rod award with their 1939 Oldsmobile Convertible 60 and Eric Wisterman won Best Custom, Master Builder, Outstanding Display and the Casi Cup awards with his outstanding “Breaking Bad” themed 1962 Chevrolet Impala.

Houston has spent millions of dollars preparing to host the Super Bowl this year and that included renovations to the convention center and the addition of hotels and parking. The downtown area looks great and benefited the Houston AutoRama as well by providing more choices in hotels, dining and local entertainment like Discovery Green Park which features an ice rink during the holidays. The Houston AutoRama has a lot going on and certainly will please the auto enthusiast. Check in your local area for a show near you.
