64th Annual Detroit Autorama
Description

Billed as America’s Greatest Hot Rod Show, the 64th Annual Detroit Autorama was sponsored by Meguiar’s, presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts, and hosted by the Michigan Hot Rod Association. With this group behind your event it had to be awesome, and it was.

Friday night festivities included the Ridler’s Ball that has become the official kick off party of the Detroit Autorama. After all the food and fun, this party’s main focal point was to make a special announcement of who had made the Pirelli Great 8 to compete for the Ridler Award. The Pirelli Great 8 finalists were: Joe Horish from Wilmington, Delaware with a 1961 Chevy Bubble Top turned station wagon, Richard Broyles from Jonesborough, Tennessee with a 1941 Ford truck, Michael Markin from Eau Claire, Wisconsin with a 1938 Graham, Mark Gooden from Marshall, Missouri with a 1952 Mercedes, Chris Bitmead of Orange Grove, Western Australia with a 1976 Falcon, Billy Thomas of Georgetown, Texas with a 1939 Oldsmobile convertible, Greg Malvaso of Murfreesboro, Tennessee with a 1940 Willys and Kenny Welch from Boise, Idaho with a 1937 Ford Coupe.

This show was huge with so much to see and do it was almost impossible to see it all in one day. Two levels of the Cobo Center were filled to capacity with hot rods, customs, classics, muscle cars, exotics and the list goes on forever. If you couldn’t find something you liked in this building, fossil fuel doesn’t run in your veins. This awesome event ran for three fun filled, action packed days.

There are many awards presented during the closing hours of the show on Sunday, but the main focus was on who out of the Great 8 finalists was going to win the Ridler and the $10,000 cash that goes with it. The winner for the 2016 64th Annual Detroit Autorama was Billy Thomas of Georgetown, Texas with his 1939 Oldsmobile convertible.

If you have never attended this event it needs to be on your list of events to attend in 2017. This show really lived up to it’s billing as America’s Greatest Hot Rod Show. For more information on the 2016 event please visit https://autorama.com/attend/detroit/
