..Cruisin’  Style  Magazine’s Award  Winner at the Shades  of  the  Past  Hot  Rod  Roundup

Derrick  Smith,  the  builder  of  this  year’s  award-winning  ’50  Ford  Convertible  was  given  free  hand  to  do  his  thing  by  the  owner  that  chooses  to  remain  anonymous  but  is  a  true  automotive  enthusiast  and  has  some  serious  plans  for  not  only  this  over  the  top  ride  but  several  others  he’s  contracted  Derrick  to  build  and  has  plans  of  building  in  the  future.

Derrick is from  Cartersville Georgia where he did the ground up rebuild beginning with a sectioned and channeled frame to accommodate the nine inch Ford differential floating via a four bar coil over suspension.  Up front, things are handled by a  Mustang  II-based configuration.

The body modifications are subtle but Derrick was tireless with his attention to detail.  The  PPG  Miami Cream paint seems to be flowing like pure cream over the flawless body.

The Ford crate, the aluminum head 302 engine sets like a fine jewel in a piece of automotive artwork.  The attention to detail is over the top with the engine compartment being just as flawless as the exterior.  Power to the nine-inch rear end is transferred from this healthy power plant through a  Ford  AOD tranny that allows smooth, effortless miles of cruising.

When  it  came  time  to  wrap  up  this  project  and   lay  down  the  mixture  of  Brazilian  mocha  leather  and  Cappuccino  tan  wool  carpet,  Derrick  handed  it  over  to  Steve   Holcomb  at  Pro  Auto  in  Knoxville, TN  where  they  installed  the  new  convertible  top  and  made  this  drop  top  shoe  box  Ford  ride  as  comfortable  as  it  is  to  look  at.

Derrick received multiple awards including a Top  Twenty  Five, he ’s no stranger to the winner's circle and I ’m looking forward to seeing what automotive art he ’s creating next.  One of the major factors  I always consider when picking the  Cruisin’ Style pick has always been finding the ride I would prefer to hit the strip in Pigeon  Forge  and go, well... Crusin’  in  Style!
