Daytona Kart Week

If you’re new to this kind of racing you’d be amazed at all the entries (over 400) and participation in this hotly contested, but family friendly and fun event. Daytona actually kicks off the 2015 Kart season in which some participants race over 30 weekends a year!

With names you may recognize like Jim McMurray (and son Jamie too who won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Daytona 500 in 2010), they all had their start in karts. I visited with veterans like Bobby Butler  and Johnny West to 6yr old Caleb Gafrarar who just won 2nd place in the 12 lap Kid Kart race over the Speedway’s half-mile sprint course. You’ll find so many more in the racing community who all had stints growing up in the karting world.

I was introduced to Karting when as a youth (some 60plus years ago; where does the time go!?) my uncle had a racing kart powered by a McCulloch racing engine and another Uncle chasing us kids down the country roads at 60+mph (try doing THAT today!). Make no mistake, this is all very serious business! Rugger Gottsacker pulled a big rig from San Antonio, TX with a pile of go-karts that averaged about $20,000 each! Frames made in Italy, a variety of engines including a Honda water-cooled engine, 6-speeds, Digital displays and GPS all can be found here. These folks travel all over the East Coast, Mid-West and more competing for the end of year championship.

The World Karting Association was formed in the early 70’s and has been attending Daytona every year since. They have their own magazine, web-site and Facebook page even! Look them up at .

This was truly an exciting fun-filled family oriented experience. Many said that the friendships they all share, the camaraderie, the nightly cookouts and fun of competing has driven them to continue this tradition and experience year after year. It may be called the Dirt World Championships but its more like a huge family reunion! Check it out next time you’re near an event - you’ll love it!
