GM Oktoberfest NPD and Silver Springs Team up for a Laid Back, All-GM Show

The first year for the GM Oktoberfest was 2006 and it’s been going strong ever since. Their ninth annual get-together attracted General Motors products from throughout the state and around the Southeast. Designed as a relaxing day in the company of like-minded people, the show attracted more than 425 entries with drivers and spectators enjoying both the cars and the camaraderie. Although it is a Saturday-only event, there is a way to add even more fun to this annual show. NPD organizes a tour on Friday, with the caravan leaving from their Ocala headquarters and traveling through scenic horse country to historic Cedar Key. As one of Florida’s oldest ports, it has become a haven for artists and unique shopping experiences. While you’re there, enjoy the local restaurants, famous for their fresh seafood, usually caught that day. The return trip adds even more fun since NPD opens their fabulous collection of vehicles to the folks on tour.

Saturday is the show itself, held at Florida’s original nature park, Silver Springs. The crystal clear Silver River aquifer and those famous glass bottom boats have been attracting tourists since the late 1870s. The pristine location provided lots of display space for the huge collection of General Motors vehicles. Preregistered 1989 or older cars were admitted free while vehicles 1990 or newer paid a modest $10 parking fee that went directly to support Silver Springs. Since fun was the name of the game, the laid-back gathering employed People’s Choice judging, with the beautiful 1958 Chevy Cameo pickup of Gary Barrett from Jacksonville, Florida coming out on top.
