Hellcat Heaven

Russ Lansky has had a dream of owning a Dodge Hellcat since Dodge introduced this beast in 2015.  This task has not been easy as the dealers have been charging 5k-10k over MSRP.

Dodge SRT Hellcat demand easily outstripped the supply—is this something the company intended, I don’t know. It was also blatantly obvious that a lot of dealers gouged the hell out of customers looking to get one of the few Hellcats around—something that Dodge isn’t terribly fond of, but all of their dealers are independently owned. In an attempt to limit dealer shenanigans, Dodge was going to do a few things: cancel pending 2015 orders, increase production of 2016 models, and change the way they allocate cars to dealerships.

The company has built about 4000 Hellcat Charger 4 door models and Challenger two door models, in total, so far. Dodge President and CEO Tim Kuniskis said 2016 production would more than double, although the exact production numbers aren’t clear.

A more rational allocation program should have reduced the sort of dealer vulgar price-gouging that left a bad taste in a lot of Hellcat fans’ mouths. Dealers will get a clear idea of how many cars they’ll be able to order at a time, and they won’t be able to order more unless they fulfill some conditions.

Russ found only one dealer that had the smaller price add on of 5k and would or could order him a Challenger Hellcat, and that was Arrigo Dodge in Sawgrass, not much has really changed from 2015 practices.

When Russ and I got to the dealership they had two Challenger Hellcats on the lot, one in Black and the other in Plum Crazy Pearl.  The Plum Crazy color was the car Russ wanted and the only thing this car did not have was a sun roof on his order list and a stripe, new for the 2016 model year.  When the manager went to the computer they found Dodge would be building no more Plum Crazy Challengers for 2016.  The Plum Crazy Pearl painted Hellcat really stood out as the Black car would have had to have his engine bay open to impress.  The Plum Crazy car was left over from a person who had backed out of his order.  The dealership told Russ they would charge him only 2k over MSRP if he could live without a sun roof and buy the car on the show room floor, especially if  he wanted Plum Crazy.  With 3k to work with Russ could look into adding the stripe at a later date.  Needless to say 2 days later Russ drove home his new Dodge Challenger Hellcat.

The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is considered the fastest, most powerful muscle car ever, thanks to the supercharged HEMI Hellcat V-8 engine, which delivers an unprecedented 707 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque. The 6.2-liter V-8 is also the first factory-built supercharged HEMI.

They handed our new owner 3 key fobs two in the color red for 707hp and a black one for valet parking that will only give the driver 500hp. LOL
