KARMA
Description

Look up Karma and you’ll see that it refers to an intentional thought or deed that a person may take that affects the now and the future of their life. Such was the case of Roger Thompson of Port Orange, Florida who purchased this 1969 VW Karmann Ghia Pro-Touring Coupe. He has been featured within these pages several times before because of his unique taste with various rides (Jul 2014-75 Bricklin and Aug 2015 ‘60 Rambler American “Super”). Surely this car keeps him “in this zone” and it is no exception to “different” that makes him tick!

A brief introduction to the Karman Ghia first off. Initially in 1950, Karmann - a German Coachbuilder who fabricated its carefully constructed bodywork and Ghia - a presigious Italian designhouse who penned its elegant shape, were picked by Volkswagen to produce this car. Originally powered by a 60hp air-cooled flat four cylinder, this now has a Chevy 350/350 combo. Many had claimed it was a German tortoise amongst British and Italian hares, however, it now has PURE RAW excitement! It still maintains the exceptional style and quality that it was always known for among some 360,000 copies produced.

This car was professionally built in S. Floida with a custom square tube chassis, mustang front end and a 4 link 10 bolt chevy coil-over rear end (3:55 gears). Fitted with a mild cam, custom headers and 2200 stahl converter (Lokar Shifter) its as easy on the street and dependable as any new car. Roger attributes the ride to the custom chasis as 33in wide Mickey Thompsons and a short wheelbase might suggest otherwise.

A Burgendy and Gray Interior with a power drivers seat and VDO Gold Heritage guages keeps an eye on all the vitals. It run cool too he says mostly because of its Griffin aluminum radiator fitted with dual Flex-A-Lite fans which are thermostatically controlled. Its painted a base coat/clear coat Royal Red Pearl Metalic which really pops in direct sunlight! It rolls down the highway shod with old American Torque Thrust wheels (15x4.5 fronts with 165/80/R15’s and 15x12 rears shod with 29x15.5x33 rear tires)

What better “Karma” than to have purchsed this Karmann Ghia to keep the drive alive and that is says Roger “to not follow the crowd” and his quest to be “different”. While his rear tag says RUKIDNG, it’s an Amen from me on all counts and congrates on sharing with us such a cool ride! Can’t wait to see what’s in your future!
