The Deep South Cobra Clubs Annual Reptile Roundup November 6-9, 2014
Description

Article and Pictures by Dan Wulff

Again as I always do I attended our annual gathering of snakes, and this year it was held in my back yard.

Thursday—November 6th

For those coming in from out of town the check in time was at 3:00pm at the host hotel the Homewood Suites, located at 16450 Corporate Commerce Way Fort Myers, FL 33913. There was plenty of trailer parking in the back lot.

Friday -- November 7th

At 8:00am the Deep South Cobra Club was to start the weekend off with the Cruise to Muscle Car City, located in Punta Gorda, Florida.   Those staying at the motel departed from the Homewood Suites at around 8:00am.  The entry fee was paid for by the DSCC, all you had to do was be sure to check if your name was on the signup sheet for admission. Those that took the tour spent about 2-hours in the museum. This year’s car show was judged by me and the awarded trophy was awarded in the parking lot of the museum to Jeffery O’Neal with his ghosted stripe painted Factory Five Cobra. We all left at 11am, for our lunch trip to be held at Ford's Garage in downtown Fort Myers from 11:30 to 1:30pm. The Ladies even had time to check out some of the local shops! After lunch, the group drove over to the Edison & Ford Winter Estates for a guided tour from 2:00-4:00pm, I check out on this adventure as with this year’s Reptile Roundup being held in my back yard for the first time ever, plus I had been there many times before.   The group admission was $18 and needed to be paid for in one cash payment, so Larry Hess our club president collected the $18 per person fee during lunch for those planning on attending the tour. As the host hotel provided everyone staying their dinner meal on Thursday night at Homewood Suites, our club planned to hold the Meet & Greet in the hotel parking lot Friday night at 6pm. Backdraft Racing sponsored the Meet & Greet with pizza and drinks as they always do.   Reg and his father Frank Dodd pulled in with a very long and large trailer loaded with a few of their latest snakes inside.

Saturday -- November 8th.

The only thing I attended on Saturday was the dinner at 6:30pm, the Collier Collection of over 100 cars would only give us room for 34 people and since living locally I have been there before so was letting those from out of down see the Collier car collection.

At 8:00am the day started with a cruise to Naples Luxury Imports in Naples, Florida

They arrived at 9am for viewing some fantastic import automobiles. The time was limited and was going to be a quick 30-minute visit, so they had no time to take advantage of their full breakfast offering, but had time for a cup of coffee and donut and to see their high-end cars for sale. They needed to leave Naples Luxury Imports at 9:30am sharp for the 15-minute run to the Collier Collection.

Arriving at 10:00am for the Collier Collection, this is offered by the Rev’s Institute in Naples, Florida. Larry Hess had the prepaid tickets for the tour, which were passed out in the parking lot. They restrict entry to only 34 patrons per hour. We had over 34 members doing the tour. For those who elected to attend a December make up tour of local cobra owners, Larry will schedule it with you individually later on.  At 12:30pm, they departed for the 60-minute ride to the Rod & Gun Club for lunch at 1:30pm. A small before departure snack was provided to cut hunger pains until everyone arrived for lunch.

The 1:30pm arrival at the Rod and Gun Club located in Everglade City, Florida was like a walk back in time, lunch at this historic site would offer a great chance for some great group photos. I’m normally the clubs photographer but an 80 mile trip one way trip for lunch did not seem practical so I’m hoping to see others pictures.  Everyone had to bring cash-as they do not accept credit cards.  They planned to leave the restaurant around 3:00pm to arrive back at the host hotel at approximately 4:30pm.

At 6:30pm the Happy Hour/Dinner was held at the Islamorada Fish Company in their outside patio, this restaurant is located and adjacent to Bass Pro Shop in the Gulf Coast Mall, which is only a 5-minute ride from the host hotel. Our annual membership meeting and door prize drawings were held after dinner. Backdraft and Finish Line Accessories donated the many door prizes. Please support our Sponsors.

Many from out of town left for home after lunch as we had another cold front coming through with rain predicted for all day Sunday, plus Saturday evening was not looking good either, otherwise the dinner turn out would have been a much  larger group.  On Sunday they had 1½ inches of rain in Everglades City.

This year Finish Line Accessories changed ownership and is no longer owned by the Alibrandi family nor located in Florida.  Drew Serb is the new owner, and he also owns a real cobra, Dragon Snake CSX2357 painted in light blue metal flake paint.  Finish Line’s new address is 777 Arnold Drive, Suite 200 Martinez, CA 94553

Sunday – November 9th

After breakfast at the hotel, any that stayed over, you may want to do a bit of shopping at the Gulf Coast Town Center or the Coconut Point Mall. Combined they have over 2.5 million square feet of outdoor shops. If you have any questions, please email: president@dscc.us . Detailed driving maps were provided at each event. Each time we do a change of roads, lead cobra will slow down to ensure all are in trail. I look forward to seeing you on Nov 6, 2014 President Larry Hess.
