The Ramblin Oldies of Denham Springs

40th Annual R.O.D.S. Run February 23-25, 2018

Baton Rouge, Louisiana

The big 40th Anniversary R.O.D.S. Run in Baton Rouge, Louisiana was over the top!  Hard to believe the Ramblin’ Oldies of Denham Springs streetrod club have been hosting a 3-day, pre-49 rod run since 1978 in and around the Baton Rouge area!  This year the event was held at Gerry Lane Cadillac, next door to the host hotel the Hampton Inn of Baton Rouge, on Reiger Road.

Close to 125 street rods attended this year, driving from such distances as North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky, and way down in Florida!  That’s not bad for February!  It did rain a little early on Friday, but cars were already rolling in and drying off.  The RODS sound system was playing tunes from the 50’s and 60’s and the registration room was hopping.

This year in honor of the 40th Anniversary, each entrant got to pick from one of 3 different door prizes!  Those plus the nice goody bags and the free Friday night shrimp stew meal for the participants were worth the registration fee!

Saturday it was sunny and windy.  Just perfect.  The Ramblin’ Oldies run is like a reunion for area street rodders, and it is really nice to visit with old friends who drop by to check out the cars and get a legendary 2-sided, full color event t-shirt.  There were golf carts roaming the grounds transporting entrants and spectators from the show site to the hotel and parking areas, which was pretty cool.  And a free shuttle was provided to take people to the Mall of Louisiana for a little shopping if they wanted.

There was a free swap meet in the parking lot Saturday with some pretty neat stuff available for reasonable prices.  A food truck allowed everyone to stay at the show site for lunch, and then we handed out over 30 Sponsor Awards to deserving rodders!

Saturday after a live auction to benefit Hospice of Baton Rouge, the participants drove to several notable area seafood restaurants for supper, then came back to Gerry Lane to hear LIVE music in the parking lot – “CRS and the Forgetfulls” with Warren Broussard.  They played rhythm, blues and swam pop music… and they are good!

Sunday morning we moved the awards to the registration room, but there was not a drop of rain!  Awards were handed out for best paint, best interior, best engineered and best engine.  The RODS Memorial Award was presented to Ken Valverde for his support to street rodding, and he was touched.

Then the Top 10 rods – picked by the participants - were announced:

Ronnie Frederic, Gonzales La. 1937 Packard Pickup

Buddy Wells, Baton Rouge, La. 1924 Hudson Sedan

Rick Perre’, Metairie, La. 1934 Hudson

John Benoit, Addis, La. 1946 Chevy Panel

Tim Splawn, Lafayette, La. 1940 Ford Coupe

Earl Brewer, Vicksburg, Ms. 1937 Chevy Pickup

Joe Guidry, Ponchatoula, La. 1938 DeSoto Sedan

Jim Whipp, Vero Beach, Fl. 1941 Chevy Sedan

Jerry Buchicchio, Slidell, La. 1939 Ford Convertible

Gary Roth, Slidell, La. 1941 Packard Sedan

This year we were able to give Hospice of Baton Rouge a check for $2,000.00.  Then we gave away $1,000.00 in cash prizes to some lucky participants who stayed for the devotional service and Sunday awards!

The next R.O.D.S. Run will be February 22-24, 2019, at Gerry Lane Cadillac in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  We will again have free supper for the participants, a free automotive swap meet on Saturday, another food truck on site and plenty of Sponsor Awards and door prizes.  Then on Sunday morning we will have a short devotional service followed by the big awards and cash prizes.

Please come on down to Baton Rouge and we’ll show you a good time!
